Walter Martella

Walter Martella is a Canadian musician, conductor, and educator based in Powell River (qathet), British Columbia. He serves as Music Director of the Powell River Academy of Music (qathet Academy of Music & Arts) and is an artistic leader with the International Choral q̓at̓ᶿaymɩxʷ (Kathaumixw) festival. A multi-instrumentalist (piano, trumpet, accordion) and private teacher, Walter’s conducting work includes ensembles such as the Academy Chamber Choir, Chor Musica Men’s Choir, and the Powell River Chorus, and he has a longstanding connection to the Powell River Boys Choir. His training includes the University of Victoria, Vancouver Island University (Malaspina College), the Banff School of Fine Arts, and the BC Choral Federation conducting program. He has led major works including Handel’s Messiah, Schubert’s Mass in G, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and Holst’s Rig Veda.
